A Night To Remember: a lamp, a bowl, and Love Providence

Imagine yourself sitting in a dark room. Your circle of friends surrounds a small lighted lamp. A bowl sits perfectly on top, revealing only a small portion of the light that was intended to show.

When you think about this image, what's a word that comes to mind?
weird. dumb. Why would somebody put a bowl on top of a lamp? The lamp is meant to provide light. Why cover its purpose, it's function?

In the Bible, Jesus says: "Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don't you put it on it's stand?" Through reading several other related passages, we were able to understand that our "light" is the love that God brings to us to show his people. We were meant to be servants in a needy world and display the love that Jesus has given us through active works such as serving the poor.

So, next Wednesday on October 28th at 7:30pm, Intervarsity, Harambee, and L.I.F.E. will be gathering together in the Faculty Center behind Donovan to learn more about serving the needy. A guest speaker from the non-profit organization, Love Providence, will be discussing the issues of poverty, justice, jesus, and action. An invitation has been extended to all members of the RIC campus community to participate in serving South Providence at a later date to be announced. If this event is one that has piqued your interest, please come! Bring your friends to a free event with free food!

If you have any questions, please email Adam at: adamdcroft@gmail.com.

A Review

Hi friends!

Thanks to all who came to our meeting on Tuesday night. Here is a brief review.

Following worship, we learned about a Rhode Island based organization dedicated to serving South Providence in a variety of ways. Our hope is that we will be able to include the entire campus community in an outreach event. More information will follow about Love Providence in the near future.

May his hope light your path.

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder that our Core Meeting is Tuesday at 7:30pm in Room 307 in the Student Union.

Other things to note:

Fall Conference: The spots are filling up quickly. If you want to go there is still time but the sooner you let me know the better. IF you want to go please contact ME (adam.d.croft@gmail.com) and I will let you know how to register.

Love Providence: RIC IV along with other IV's around the state are partnering with a local non profit in providence called Love Providence. We will be having opportunities to serve in some very poor areas of the city (i.e. South Providence) This will also be used as an outreach event to the entire campus, where we'll be inviting people into the work that Jesus is doing in the world. So, more info to come about that very soon. I'll talk more about it at the core meeting.

Urbana: The sooner you sign up the less it costs you, so if you're thinking about it...go for it! :)

Looking forward to seeing you Tuesday at 7:30pm!

Hi friends,

Thanks to all who came to our weekly Intervarsity meeting last night in the Student Union. Here is a brief review for those who were not able to attend.

Our topic of discussion focused on GIG's (Group Investigating God). This faith building activity is designed to explore, discuss, and share the life of Jesus with a small group containing one or more friends. These friends may be curious about Christianity, may be unfamiliar with the teachings of Jesus, or would like to learn more about being a Christian. Topics would focus on issues pertaining to your friends lives as you meet for four weeks.

This new part of Intervarsity would be beneficial to you and your friend(s). You will see your friends and yourself grow through this interactive and humbling experience.

We encourage all who are interested in sharing your faith to consider leading a GIG. If you would like more information or have any questions regarding the GIG, Intervarsity, or future events, please contact Adam Croft at adam.d.croft@gmail.com.

Have a peaceful week!

A Night in Review

Hi friends,

Thanks to all who came to our CORE meeting on Tuesday night. We strengthened new and current friendships through a "surprise" prayer walk on campus. We dived into the scriptures, focusing on this week's theme of "prayer." Examining the gospel's, we discovered how Jesus invites us to pray and the way in which we are called to pray. God seeks simple prayers with a humble heart completely focused on him. The Bible calls us to worship in various ways, one of which is singing praises to God. Thus, our night concluded with worship to God in the ambiance of peaceful guitar music and beautiful singing.

We hope that you will join us NEXT week for our CORE meeting on Tuesday at 7:30pm. The location will be announced in the coming days.

Have a peaceful weekend.

Coming Soon!!

Hi!

Thanks to all who came to our meeting last week. We enjoyed examining the word of God in our Bible study, focusing on John 4. We discussed Jesus' conversation with the Samaritan woman, her influence on telling the people in her community about her encounter with Jesus, and the implications of this passage on our campus.

Thus, the following questions were posed:

*What is holding me back from telling others about Jesus?
* Why am I not stepping out of my "social norm" (comfort zone) as Jesus did in order to spread the free message of love?

We hope that you will join us next week for our meeting as we continue to dive into Jesus' teachings. More information will be posted on here in the coming days.

peace,

A Time to Gather

Hi all,
Here is a run down of next week's activities.

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 22nd - 7:30-9pm is our CORE MEETING in the Student Union Room 307. -We will be training on how to do spiritual surveys and the four circle diagram. The four circle diagram is a way to communicate the gospel developed by an IV staff on the West Coast named James Choung.

Wednesday Sept 23rd - 12:30-1:45 we will actually be going out to do the surveys on campus.

Thursday Sept 24th - 6pm we will be doing the surveys again. (The meeting place will be announced shortly.)

There are two times that we are doing surverys in order to give more people an opportunity to participate. You may come to one or both. However, if you plan on coming to do a survey, it is somewhat important that you come to the core meeting for the training.

Ok have a great weekend and see you all next week!

peace,

Come for a Walk

Hi friends!

Thank you to all who came to our first event on Thursday night. It was great to meet new people, share stories, and partake in an array of delicious food. We believe it was a success.

Next week, Intervarsity will be holding our first prayer walk at RIC. As followers of Jesus, we believe that prayer heals, provides hope, and restores. We plan to walk around the different parts of the campus and simply pray. For those who may be a little new to the "prayer" idea, we will be together as a group praying silently to ourselves for the staff workers, students, financial aid office...whatever you feel led to pray for. If you feel comfortable praying out loud, please feel free to do so. We believe that God accepts us just the way we are.

We are a community followers dedicated to seeing all students and faculty transformed by the Resurrected Jesus sent out to bring hope to the campus. Participating in a prayer walk is one of the ways that we can fulfill this mission together.

So, come join us on Tuesday evening at 6:30pm. We will begin in the IV lounge/office in the Student Union Room 428 (top floor) for a little bit of pre-prayer walk "training." Then, we'll go walk for about an hour, meeting back in the office for some debriefing. For those who would like to stay, we will be engaging in some board games. Try your hand at a card game or feel free to bring your own. Come for a few minutes or stay for the entire time...whatever fits into your schedules.

All are welcome!

Events

Hi friends,

Welcome back to campus! I hope you are all having a great start to your semester so far.

Tonight (sept 1st) at 7:30pm in the Intervarsity office (located in the Student Union Building room 428, top floor, back corner) we will be holding a training for those who want to help us run our proxe station on Wednesday.

You may be asking..."what is a proxe station?"
that is a very good question.

A proxe station is an interactive display designed to engage students on the campus and get their opinions on different topics. This station is entitled "Why are you here?" its a great way to meet some new people and have some great dialogue on why you came to campus and to find out why others came to campus.

On WEDNESDAY is the event from 10-2pm in the quad.

Lastly, is our first event this Thursday, Sept 3rd.
It will be at 8pm in the Student Union Building Room 307 (same floor as the ballroom)

We'll have music, food, a brief (5 minutes) film on what IV is. We'll be talking briefly as well about the topic of Why are you here?
This is a great chance to find out about Intervarsity, and meet new people!
Bring your friends!
